THE TIME IN JAZZ CULTURAL ASSOCIATION

SINCE MORE THAN 35 YEARS, THE TIME IN JAZZ FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE EVERY SUMMER IN THE HEART OF NORTHERN SARDINIA,
IN A SMALL VILLAGE CALLED BERCHIDDA.

From here a group of far-sighted jazz music enthusiasts, led by the artistic director Paolo Fresu, took momentum, about ten years later, to set up a cultural association that would take the same name: thus the Time in Jazz cultural association was born, which 1997 operates in the territory of Berchidda and neighboring countries.

Over the years, the Time in Jazz cultural association has built an important network of relationships with organizations and structures that in various ways have contributed to the development of artistic and cultural projects in the area, in order to increase the quality and professionalism level of their activities and to help strengthen and implement an effective network of exchanges with concerted territorial actions.

In recent years, in addition to organizing the Festival (its flagship), the association has had the honor of organizing other important projects financed by public bodies (various ministries and local bodies) and private individuals, proving that the association diversifies its work and intends to broaden its horizons more and more, not only dealing with the main festival, but with a series of other artistic and cultural activities; always using reliable and trusted human resources who follow the activities of the association with care and passion.

Time in Jazz has developed a network of actions, initially with the island realities, then, over the years, forging relationships with festival networks both in the peninsula and in Europe, through strategies of circulation of original productions and the creation of collaborations aimed at promote young talents by encouraging generational turnover, consolidate relations with the territories of origin by enhancing sites and places and with them the various precious environmental and cultural heritages, creating the conditions for a territorial rebalancing.

Also on the occasion of the latest events, Time in Jazz has dedicated a significant part of its commitment and activities to the creation and development of relationships with other Italian and European cultural realities, and will continue to do so in the future.

Time in Jazz is one of the founding members of I-Jazz, the national association that brings together some of the best known and most followed Italian jazz festivals and which pursues the objective of disseminating projects related to jazz, from reviews and festivals circuits.

Attentive to environmental issues and committed to sustainable management of the event, so much so that it has obtained important recognitions, the Time in Jazz Association has put its experience at the service of the community and has become a partner in a European project – LIFE GreenFest – dedicated to drafting guidelines for the sustainability of major cultural events in Europe.

Since 2008 Time in Jazz has been carrying out Green Jazz, an important ecological awareness project that aims to reduce the impact of the festival on the environment and on the natural resources of the area, through the creation of events and projects focused on some of the most current environmental issues. Green Jazz made use of the collaboration of partners and sponsors such as local authorities and private companies, and of the fundamental contribution of the local community and the festival audience, actively involved in a process of awareness.

In 2021, Jazz Takes The Green was born, the network of eco-sustainable jazz festivals, the first Italian experience of aggregation of cultural events that have the Green cause at heart: Italian jazz, for its historical roots in the territories and for its proximity to the dynamics social, has recently shown a marked sensitivity towards the problems of our time, increasingly taking clear positions on how music can represent and be experienced in terms of social responsibility. Composed of 17 festivals distributed among 11 regions, from the north to the south of Italy, Jazz Takes The Green is an initiative that arose thanks to the synergy between Green Fest, the Ecosistemi Foundation and I-Jazz, an association that brings together the majority of Italian jazz festivals. Jazz Takes The Green members have set themselves the goal of promoting the conversion of jazz festivals from events with a high environmental impact to Green events, thanks to the adoption of the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) developed as part of the GreenFEST – Green Project Festivals and Events through Sustainable Tenders.

Also in the last editions of the festival, the Time in Jazz association has dedicated a significant part of its activities to the creation and development of relationships with other European festivals and cultural realities in order to allow the circulation of productions and artists, and to contribute to the consolidation of a permanent and dynamic process of diffusion of music and art.

Since 2005 he has been a founding member of the “Sardinia Jazz Network” Association, created with the specific aim of promoting and coordinating jazz and contemporary music events.

Also in 2021, the Time in jazz Association sets up, together with the other 3 Historical Jazz Festivals of Sardinia, the ATS “L’isola del jazz” aimed at promoting Sardinia as a privileged destination for the large European audience of the public interested in jazz and to the fruition of cultural heritage, using the rich heritage of excellent musical activities developed in the field of jazz music.

Great prizes and national and international acknowledgments have been attributed to Time in Jazz and to the value of its festival, as it is capable of creating networks, communities and virtuous social processes.

The UNESCO Patronage has recognized the international importance of the festival for several years.

Numerous awards relating to the GREEN footprint that the association, the festival, its artistic director and all the staff have and continue to accrue year after year; some of these:

  • 2013: Award > to Festival Internazionale Time in Jazz, Milan
  • 2014: Award > to Festival Internazionale Time in Jazz, Milan
  • 2019: Award > to Festival Internazionale Time in Jazz, Rome
  • 2020: Time in Jazz was awarded the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic

Training and the transfer of knowledge, with particular reference to music, have always been a fixed point for Time in Jazz. Since the first editions of the festival, the concerts have been accompanied by training moments, conferences and thematic workshops. The programming of the following years – especially the last ones – have offered ample space for structured and recurring events, such as seminar-concerts.

A profound reflection on renewable energies and their role began by gradually realizing the concerts in increasingly unusual natural settings (country churches, beaches, archaeological sites, lagoons, railway stations, ships, pine forests, etc.). A reflection that was strengthened by the great changes we are witnessing and which could not ignore evolution, a broad reflection that culminated in the creation of a revolutionary audio and lighting system based on the accumulation and production of energy through solar panels , included in an important ecological awareness project that aims to reduce the impact of the festival on the environment and natural resources of the area, through the creation of events and projects focused on some of the most current environmental issues, gathered under the title “Green Jazz”. For this reason, the Time in Jazz Festival has become a national point of reference among green festivals.
